"This is a beautiful picture book that presents a rich childhood story. It contrasts the real world and the lights of the Christmas tree with the darkness far away from the real world, showing the deep and precious friendship between children dedicated to each other." ——"il mondo di Chri" picture book review media

Christmas Eve is here. It's snowing and cold outside, and adults, relatives, and friends gather at the dining table to eat, drink, chat, and celebrate Christmas. The house is decorated with all kinds of red, gold, silver and blue...so many colors! Why not try celebrating Christmas in a dark room? Want to play an imaginary gift exchange game?

In a dark room, Peter and Julia closed their eyes and enjoyed their favorite game - the various objects they collected became something completely different when they touched them with their hands and traveled through unrestrained fantasy! A "fork" becomes a "key to a secret treasure chest", an "old shoe" becomes a "bed where elves sleep", or a "dwarf's house"...

When their hands touched each other, in an instant, the dark room was filled with clean and boundless blue. Julia finds the sky where Peter hopes to fly the plane; Peter dives into the sea where Julia longs to swim freely. When the adults in the family open the door and come in, the darkness dissipates, and the fantasy adventure of the two is immediately interrupted and disappears on the horizon of imagination. However, the future they longed for quietly returned to each other's pockets. They know it.

Claudia Palmaucci's paintings are delicate and unique in style. This book has realistic Christmas dinner scenes, as well as abstract compositions of black + fluorescent. The two go hand in hand, completely breaking through the existing imagination space. Paired with bold illustrations, the book presents readers with a unique style of imagining in the dark, allowing readers to feel an alternative childishness. This contrasts with the noisy adult world, creating a cold and warm atmosphere. The contrast is quite stark. Page by page, it leads us on an imaginary journey that we have never imagined, and finally steps into the future that belongs to children - a clear blue sky and sea.

This is a picture book full of poetry, with cold colors and impressive composition, but it carries the innocent friendship between children and the most sincere blessings that are more precious than colorful gifts. This book reminds us that in the pitch black, as long as you put your mind to it, you can see the infinite world, and the future you are looking forward to or have been looking forward to stays safely in that dark pocket.
