This book focuses on Macau's garment industry, featuring interviews with seven former garment factory workers. Their stories, written by their children, aim to reignite dialogue and recall memories, piecing together this "collectively forgotten" chapter of Macau's history. Through the personal oral histories of these women, we indirectly observe the changes and transformations in Macau's industrial structure and its rapid social development.
The interviewees include native Macanese, new immigrants, and former undocumented immigrants. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they were all drawn to the rapid development of the garment industry, becoming part of Macau's apparel export workforce.
"In the 1980s, besides garment making, there weren't many job options for women."
In the 1980s, Macau entered a golden age of industrial development, with the garment industry becoming its largest industry. In the 1990s, Macau's industries faced pressure from rising operating costs and competition from neighboring regions. The tourism and gaming industries began to rise, gradually replacing industry as Macau's leading economic sector. Most of these interviewed women entered the garment industry at different times in the 1980s. However, as the garment industry declined, many garment workers left the industry or moved to other cities to continue garment making. Their personal growth trajectories are closely intertwined with and overlap with the development of Macau's garment industry.
Garment making not only allowed these women to pursue clear production goals with their craftsmanship but also empowered them with financial independence. Garment making also directly shaped their lives, leaving a deep imprint on their personal growth.
