Malaysian Sketches

The title, "Malay Sketches," is taken from the anthology of anecdotes with the same name, compiled by Frank Swettenham, Governor of the Straits Settlements in the late 19th century, describing the lives of the indigenous people of the Malay Peninsula. In the hands of Singaporean youth writer Alfian Sa'at, these "sketches" are reimagined as concise and insightful micro-fictions, presenting readers with the realities of life for minority ethnic groups in Singapore.

Alfian Sa'at is a renowned bilingual poet, novelist, and playwright, also viewed by the Singaporean government as a "dissident." The diverse characters in the book represent a group of minorities whose voices have been silenced within Singapore's mainstream development narrative – Malays, who make up only 15% of the total population. They are portrayed as if they were an indigenous people who never existed before independence, and a "backward" community that has always struggled to keep pace with development since independence.

Through 48 short stories, the author reveals various problems arising from Singapore's modern discourse of meritocracy, multiculturalism, and secularism, where the "backwardness" of Malays is seen as the source of many social issues. They grew up in their homeland, yet gradually became homeless – this is the dilemma faced by Singaporean Malays.

Alfian Sa'at's writing practice inherits the tradition of Malay intellectuals from the last century, and his works are characterized by a high degree of social concern and historical consciousness. The Malays depicted by Alfian Sa'at are living subjects, each searching for their voice.
