Winston, a minor party member responsible for distorting information and rewriting history, gradually grows suspicious of reality. Are personal memories untrustworthy? Is life in the dog-eat-dog world happier than ever before? Is independent thought something that needs to be "rehabilitated"? A barrage of questions and acts of resistance in the darkness lead him step by step into the Party's trap, plunging him into endless torture, brainwashing, and re-education.
