This is the first book to compile and compare maps and charts depicting the heights and lengths of the world's mountains and rivers. These beautifully rendered maps, produced mainly in the 19th century, stemmed from a boom in exploration and scientific advancements in surveying techniques. Beginning with the work of explorer Alexander von Humboldt, these historical drawings demonstrate the diversity of art and imagination. Many maps, with evident delight, incorporate the power of fantasy, presenting a captivating blend of reality and imagination. Most of the maps are from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection at Stanford University.
