Is our design becoming increasingly convergent? This is a highly sensitive and debatable topic, and a sufficiently sharp entry point for discussions on the development of graphic design. It involves important influential factors closely related to graphic design, such as market, history, economy, social media, and education. Discussing this topic can connect these scenarios one by one, allowing us to analyze them from a macro to micro perspective, and from the past to the present, across various dimensions. Design convergence might reflect a stalemate in contemporary graphic design. What we care about more is to rethink the relationship and meaning of "content" and "form," as well as the value of graphic design itself, amidst the arguments of "good" and "bad" in this homogenization.
To deconstruct the proposition of "design convergence," this issue of the magazine adopted various content formats. Using the three-year data charts of the Award360° Annual Design Awards as an intuitive visual starting point, the editor organized a roundtable discussion that ran through the entire thematic report. Eleven designers and scholars with diverse backgrounds and stages collectively offered their insights into the causes and impacts of design convergence. Corresponding to the topics discussed by these 11 roundtable guests, the editor invited experts from dimensions such as social media, stylistic rules, internationalism, and design education to provide readers with deeper and more detailed analyses and interpretations through articles or interviews.
