Regardless of aesthetics or personal preference,
Precisely utilize visual elements to enhance recognition and readability.

While an aesthetically pleasing and engaging layout can attract readers, if the details are not handled well, it becomes difficult to read, and all the enjoyment quickly fades. This book concisely outlines the detailed principles of typographic design, covering reading flow, letters, words, spacing between words, lines and line spacing, and the interaction of various elements. It also explores the essential conditions for enhancing text legibility.

Though concise, it is comprehensive, precisely presenting seven principles of typography. These seemingly minor details are crucial to typographic design, instantly elevating the design capabilities of entry-level design professionals and further enhancing the typesetting skills of seasoned practitioners.

Author Jost Hochuli on the original intention of this book's publication—

The issues discussed in this small book can be regarded as the field of micro or detailed typographic design.

Macro typographic design explores the layout, discussing the format of printed matter and considering factors such as the size and column position of text and images; the hierarchical arrangement of headlines, subheadings, and captions. Micro typographic design, on the other hand, focuses on individual elements, including letters, kerning, words, word spacing, line spacing, and text columns. These elements do not belong to the commonly defined "creative" realm and are therefore often overlooked by graphic or typographic designers.

When discussing formal rules, the main focus is not on "aesthetic" issues such as personal artistic freedom or taste, but rather on how to use visual elements to achieve the most suitable and acceptable effect for the text. This is the goal of a typographer when dealing with a large amount of text. Therefore, considerations regarding formal elements aim to enhance legibility and readability. In the field of micro typographic design, formal elements have little to do with personal preferences.

Frankly, in micro typographic design, problems often have different solutions. The author certainly does not wish readers to take this book as an unquestionable dogma. On the contrary, even if this book cannot cover all potential issues, the author hopes that clever designers can apply the spirit of this book to find the most appropriate solutions to typographic problems based on specific contexts.
