This selection of Saul Leiter's work, much of it published for the first time, reveals his unique contribution to photography in the twentieth century and his distinctive use of color. Leiter captured the flow and rhythm of 1950s New York street life with painterly images, using vivid colors that contrasted with the black-and-white photography prevalent among his peers at the time. He excelled at using reflections, transparency, complex compositions, and mirror effects, combined with a personalized printing style, to create unique urban landscapes; his intricate and impressionistic photographs not only captured decisive moments but also focused on creating atmosphere.
From 1952 until his death in 2013, Leiter lived in his studio in New York's East Village, which now houses the Saul Leiter Foundation. The foundation is conducting a comprehensive survey and organization of over 80,000 of his images, aiming to compile his complete archives. This book includes precious documents discovered during this work, revealing the secrets of Leiter's creative process, including unpublished works, popular color works, never-before-seen black-and-white images, and private photographs that record his intimate memories.
As Saul Leiter said, "Photographs are often considered to be the capture of an important moment, but they are actually tiny fragments and memories in an endless world."
