here and there Vol.1 - Vol.13.5 Magazine 20th Anniversary Collection

here and there is an independent magazine founded in 2002 by Nakako Hayashi, former editor of Shiseido's cultural magazine Hanatsubaki. Since its inception, it has integrated fashion, art, and culture with its unique editorial approach, embodying a DIY spirit of "recording one's own time, friends, and events worth remembering." This sets it apart from the fixed patterns of traditional magazines, emphasizing its personalized characteristics, which have gradually gained popularity among niche groups and independent creators.

This new anthology project is an augmented edition of "here and there Vol.1 - Vol.10" published by Nieves Books in 2012, adding content from issues 11 to 13.5. To commemorate the book's publication, Nakako Hayashi invited several old friends to contribute messages and memories, which are included in the volume. At the same time, Kazunari Hattori, who has been the designer from issue 1 to 13.5, also created new cover and back cover artworks for this book to commemorate his time involved with the magazine.

In this nearly thousand-page collection, one can read valuable texts spanning 20 years, where editor Nakako Hayashi invited long-time friends to participate in the magazine's writing, photography, and design, such as Susan Cianciolo, Mike Mills, Elein Fleiss, Kim Gordon, Takashi Homma, and Kazunari Hattori, who has served as art director since the inaugural issue. The strong personalized narrative style is poetic yet introspective, documenting real emotions and moments of life in the form of dialogues or letters, exploring subtle human interactions and deep feelings. The magazine has currently released 15 issues.

Additionally, in the "here and there Vol.1 - Vol.13.5" anthology, we can appreciate Kazunari Hattori's extensive use of asymmetrical layouts, white space, and slanted lines in his design, breaking conventions with a minimalist yet powerfully expressive typesetting style that defies the rigid framework of traditional magazines. This free-form design enhances the magazine's artistic flair and visual warmth.

Among them, the design of each magazine's cover, back cover, and advertising inserts within the magazine are particularly experimental and innovative. The designer's philosophy of "deliberately breaking rules after understanding them" is fully and traceably demonstrated in this anthology. Readers can feast their eyes and appreciate Kazunari Hattori's enduring aesthetic of graphic design as they flip through the pages.

About the book

Editor: Nakako Hayashi, born in 1966. Editor, writer, curator, researcher. She participated in the editorial work of Shiseido's Hanatsubaki magazine, became a freelancer in 2001, and founded the magazine "here and there" in 2002. She has participated in projects ranging from publishing planning to exhibition curation, such as the "Baby Generation" exhibition in 1996 and the "Expanded Fashion" exhibition in 2014. Her authored works include "Expanded Fashion" (2011), "Reasons for Creation" (2020), and "Me and Hanatsubaki" (2023). Since 2023, she has been pursuing a Ph.D. in Fashion Journalism at the University of the Arts London, London College of Fashion. Her research topic is "Living, Thinking and Creating Together: Becoming through here and there, an Alternative Magazine."

Designer: Kazunari Hattori

Born in Tokyo in 1964, he graduated from the Design Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1988. After graduating, he joined Light Publicity, and in 2001, he became an independent graphic designer and art director, active in the design field.

His main works include Kewpie's image design and advertising direction, JR East's graphic design advertisements, art direction for "Mayonaka" magazine, art direction for "Ryuko Tsushin" magazine, art direction for "here and there" independent magazine, graphic design for Heibonsha's PR magazine "Gekkan Hyakka Jiten," logo design for Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Utrecht Art Bookstore Banana Bookstore, Uokami Bookstore, etc.; exhibition poster design for The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Yokohama Museum of Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum; book design works include cover design for Obunsha's dictionary series, book cover designs for authors such as Takuma Nakahira, Takashi Homma, Yuichi Yokoyama, and Yurie Nagashima; Kazunari Hattori solo exhibition poster design, experimental poster series Flag, and experimental cake poster works. His major awards include: Tokyo ADC Award, Tokyo ADC Member Award, 6th Kamekura Yusaku Award, Hara Hiroshi Award, Tokyo TDC Member Award, Mainichi Design Award, Tokyo TDC Grand Prix, etc.
