This book is composed of two parts. The first part compares Weber and Marx and discusses Weber's thought and its influence. The second part explores the ideological lineage from Hegel to Marx.
According to Lovett, just as there is more than one kind of real society, there are also two kinds of science about it: the sociology of civil society and the sociology of Marxism. The representatives of these two research tendencies are Max Weber and Karl Marx respectively. They all came out of Hegel's philosophy of objective spirit and entered into an analysis of human society, questioning the entire modern way of life.
