Salt evaporation ponds

Almost all the images in Ke Peng's photo book, "Salt Ponds", feature human elements, yet they are anonymous photographs; although taken in cities across China, they are indistinguishable from one another. In her five-year-long series, Ke Peng captures the collective emotions of the Chinese people, and more broadly, the changes brought about by modernization and technological transformation.

Through "Salt Ponds," Ke Peng successfully accomplishes a difficult task: creating images that, when viewed individually, captivate the viewer with exquisitely captured miniature stories, and when viewed consecutively, form a complete subjective worldview.

"Salt ponds are more like an ecosystem that might be slightly imbalanced due to human intervention, and the predicament of the lake and fish ultimately points to those who are trapped in the city yet rely on the stimulation and sense of security it provides."
