In a country where individual portrait photography is practically forbidden, French photographer Stéphan Gladieu (born 1969) conducted a photographic investigation in a clever way. In North Korea, he was constantly monitored, so he created a unique space of freedom. Gladieu photographed full-body mirror portraits of the people he met and who hosted him, portraits that required a frontal pose and direct gaze into the lens. This method, similar to the format of North Korean propaganda images, made his work more easily understood and accepted by the authorities.
Fifty years after North Korea's founding, international media coverage has largely focused on war, famine, nuclear programs, and military parades. Indoors, people must display portraits of leader Kim Il-sung and his son Kim Jong-il, with family photos or individual portraits being prohibited. Therefore, Gladieu's work constitutes an almost historic intervention in North Korea's visual politics.
