In Macao, promoting reading has become very difficult, let alone encouraging people to read books by local authors, buy local publications, and appreciate local picture books. Therefore, we have specially selected a series of excellent local works for our readers.

These books are created and published by outstanding local authors and publishers, covering different genres such as history, literature, poetry, photography, and picture books. Their rich diversity and local character make them more likely to resonate with readers. By offering them at affordable prices, they become more accessible. During the pandemic, the independent Dutch bookstore Enter Enter launched a global initiative: Read Books / Buy Books / Buy Local. This initiative not only emphasizes the importance of reading but also calls for support for small local bookstores to counter online sales, cultural hegemony, and consumer sentiment affected by the pandemic. Simultaneously, they also launched related merchandise and freely printable slogan posters. The theme of this book selection was inspired by this initiative.

After the pandemic, Macao seems to have returned to normal, but the economy has not improved. Every holiday, tourists flock in, leading to increased local rents. Outbound local consumption and the government's encouragement of an "entertainment first" attitude directly challenge the survival of bookstores. When we want to read, we should prioritize works from local bookstores and authors. Only then can we take a bigger step towards preserving local culture.
